The Danube Cycle Path is among the most beautiful in Europe, running almost entirely on dedicated bike paths beside the scenic river. You can stop in Linz (European Capital of Culture 2009), and the world heritage listed Wachau valley, with castles, abbeys and vineyards, being one of the most picturesque parts of the Danube Cycle Path. Combine a cycle tour with a visit to cultural sites such as Austria’s largest Benedictine Abbey, “Stift Melk”, and the famous ruin in Dürnstein, where English King Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned. Continue the journey towards Vienna, Austria's enchanting capital full of cultural delights.

Public Transport and Bicycles in Austria

In Austria, bikes can be transported in most regional and long-distance trains. As in Germany, travellers need to reserve a bike port in long-distance trains. This also applies to special or bigger bikes, such as tandems. The regional railjet trains also offer bike transport.

Within Austria, cycle tourists will need a special daily, weekly or monthly bicycle ticket. There are also international tickets available for international routes. See here for more details.
