The stretch of the coast between Igoumenitsa and Preveza is dotted by inviting beaches and coves with plenty of attractive places to stay and replenish your reserves. There are then two tempting detours in the form of the beautiful islands of the Ionian Sea (including Ithaca and Cephalonia) and Lake Trichonida further inland – the largest natural lake in Greece which is surrounded forests. Before crossing the Gulf of Corinth to reach Patras, stop off at Messolonghi where English poet Lord Byron was killed. He both literally and poetically left his heart in this small town it is entombed in a cenotaph there.
