The start of this stage is grassy lowland plain between the Belasica and Ograzden Mountains. The Bulgarian town of Petric, nestled at the foot of the Belasica mountain range provides a good spot to refresh and refuel. The route continues along paths lined by pinewoods through the region of the Pomaks, Bulgarian-speaking Muslims, and a minaret of a mosque rises above the surrounding buildings in the administrative centre of Dospat. Zlatograd is the southernmost town in Bulgaria, situated in the Rhodope Mountains, and from here the trail enters Greek territory, passing though the picturesque town of Petrotá with its bright, well-kept buildings and gardens.
