Along the route of the Iron Curtain Trail in Hungary there are numerous memorials and reminders of this troubled period of European history. The first section is around Sopron, close to the location where the first cut was made in the Iron Curtain in June 1989 and where the pan-European Picnic took place two months later. EuroVelo 13 then continues in Austria for some kilometres before returning to Hungary and similarly crosses back and forth on several occasions along the former Yugoslavian-Hungarian border. This section forms part of the Great Hungarian Plain and the route passes through charming landscapes and the regional centre of Szeged.
