Hærvejen, meaning the Oxen Way, is the name given to an ancient trackway in Denmark and Schleswig-Holstein. The route runs from Viborg via Flensburg to Hamburg, facilitating trade. The Ancient Road “Hærvejen” is an centuries-old pilgrim’s road of more than 500 kilometers of hiking and cycling routes through Jutland alongside burial mounds and runic stones. The route was originally used to connect Trondheim in Norway with ancient cities as far south as Santiago, Rome, and Jerusalem.
The Ancient Road cycling route was created to follow as many smaller roads as possible. Most roads are paved, but there are many smaller forest and dirt roads with gravel surface.
